Donghui Jeong

I am a cosmologist/astrophysicist who studies the origin and the evolution of our Universe.

I am working as a professor at Astronomy and Astrophysics department, Eberly College of Science, the Pennsylvania State University. I am also a director of the Center for Theoretical and Observational Cosmology (CTOC) in the Institute for Gravitation & the Cosmos (IGC). Prior to this, I was a postdoctoral fellow in theoretical cosmology in Physics and Astronomy department in the Johns Hopkins University and the TAPIR (Theoretical AstroPhysics Including Relativity) group in PMA Division (Physics, Mathematics and Astronomy) at Caltech working with Prof. Marc Kamionkowski. Even before, I was a graduate student of Texas Cosmology Center (TCC) and the Astronomy Department in the University of Texas at Austin. My thesis adviser is Prof. Eiichiro Komatsu, and here are my academic trees from mathematics genealogy project and academictree.org

I am working on various aspects of theoretical cosmology, but I also enjoy working with the real data. In particular, I am working for a high redshift galaxy survey called HETDEX (Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy eXperiment). The main theme of this mission is studying properties of dark energy by analyzing the distribution of galaxies (Lyman-alpha emitters). In current survey design, we shall observe about a million galaxies within 540 sq. deg. area in the sky at redshift of 1.9 < z <3.5. We have been obtaining data from 2017.

About our wordmark
Monica Rincon Ramirez

The IGC wordmark was created by Monica Rincon Ramirez while she was a graduate student at the Institute. Monica enjoys drawing new connections between fundamental theory and observations. Her graduate work included general relativity, loop quantum gravity, and quantum fields in cosmological backgrounds; her thesis focused on effective quantum corrections to gravitational phenomena from spinfoams and applications to cosmology. She received her PhD in 2024.

The wordmark symbolizes the scope of research at the IGC. The base represents quantum gravity, evoking the quantum geometrical picture from spinfoams and loop quantum gravity — approaches studied at the Center for Fundamental Theory. The middle shows galaxies embedded in a smooth surface characteristic of spacetime in general relativity and the larger physical scales studied at the Center for Theoretical and Observational Cosmology. The top curves to an extreme representing a supermassive black hole accompanied by an energetic jet, with a binary black hole pair nearby — the high-energy phenomena studied at the Center for Multimessenger Astrophysics.
